The Great Gatsby Review

You can dress something up as fancy as possible; however what lays underneath is what is the most important.

Not having read “The Great Gatsby”, nor having even watched a full trailer for the movie (other than short t.v spots), I went in to the theatre without any knowledge of the plot or story.

My impression of the film even before viewing it was that it looked like an overly-flashy visual attempt at transferring a renowned american novel into a big blockbuster film. And that was EXACTLY what it was.

There were definitely some interesting things happening which while benefited the film, became a determent to it as well. Some people might say this film is visually beautiful. The direction of the film was so emborided with flashy CGI that much of the set design seemed “fake” to me. This seemed like a conscious choice on the directors part, being that he wanted to make the film as flashy and intriguing to a general public as possible. The soundtrack to the movie is also an obvious attempt to attract a “younger” crowd. It featured many contemporary songs (mainly rap and hip hop) which were blended at times with some 20’s sound, but overall seemed out of place and odd.

Again, I did not read the novel, but after seeing this film I truly understand how powerful the book must be if I feel something is hiding underneath all this flash waiting to be set free. It makes me want to pick up the novel and read what was originally written. The film screamed to be stripped down (or at least I wanted it to be); to throw away all the flash and simply tell the raw story that was underneath. But unfortunately, as most major blockbusters are, everything was overly accessible and handed to the audience on a silver platter, focusing less on what I assume was the moral of the original book and more on the flashy “party scenes” and superficial-ness, to attract a contemporary audience. Stop spelling everything out for the audience. Focus less on how great the “party” scenes are and more on what the actual story is about. There was one line in the movie which summed up the entire film and that was at the very end, and that even felt out of place, considering the story tried to shield the original moral of the story as much as possible.

Not every book is transferrable to the screen. The Great Gatsby is a book that should have remained a book. What is the point of adapting a novel into a film? To change mediums? If there is something aching in a novel to be expressed in a visual medium; or to translate messages or morals that seem to be even more powerful on a screen. The book said and did it all. This film was one big attempt to reel in the cash. Unfortunately, I cannot even say it was visually entertaining, because the cheapness of the CGI got old very fast, and the few scenes that were beautiful were not worth the 2 1/2 hours of the film. Basically this movie makes me want to read the book and that by doing so I would gain more insight or knowledge into the REAL moral of this story. I came out of this movie learning nothing and feeling exactly the same as when I went in.
